Inside the Crystal: High-Precision 3D Engraving with LGWL-20WSL

Three-dimensional internal engraving. It transforms a plain block of crystal or glass into something mesmerizing. A floating portrait. A corporate logo suspended in space. A commemorative scene that defies physics. How does it work? Focus a laser beam inside the transparent material. Create microscopic cracks at precise locations. The collection of these tiny fracture points forms a 3D dot-matrix image. The LGWL-20WSL is a green laser (532 nm) cabinet machine. Specifically designed for this demanding application. 20 watts average power. Pulse width less than 15 ns. Beam quality M² < 1.3. Delivers the energy density and spot consistency needed for crisp, bright, finely detailed internal engravings in crystal, glass, and other optical materials. LGWL-20WSLis the tool.

Why 20W Green Laser for 3D Crystal Engraving?

Most consumer-grade crystal engravers use low-power green lasers – 2-5 watts. They work. But slow. Limited in engraving depth and point size. The LGWL-20WSL quadruples the power to 20 watts. What does that enable?

  • Deeper engraving. Clean points at depths exceeding 50 mm from the surface (with appropriate focusing optics).
  • Faster processing. Engrave a 100 × 100 × 80 mm portrait in 8-12 minutes instead of 30-40 minutes.
  • Larger dot size range. From 0.10 mm (fine detail) to 0.35 mm (bright, highly visible dots). Adjustable by varying power and pulse repetition frequency.

The 532 nm wavelength is ideal. Why? Glass and crystal have very low absorption at this wavelength. The beam passes through the surface without damage. But at the focal point? Energy density becomes high enough to induce a micro-plasma. That creates a permanent void or fracture. Short pulse width (sub-15 ns) localises the energy. Produces a clean, spherical dot with minimal "tails" or cracking. LGWL-20WSL gives you control.

Precision Dot Matrix and Grey-Scale Capability

The machine uses a galvanometer scanner. Directs the laser beam in three dimensions. X-Y scanning plus Z-axis movement via a motorized lift of the focusing lens or the workpiece stage. Standard field size for 3D engraving? 200 × 200 mm. Maximum Z-travel? 80 mm. Positioning accuracy ±10 µm. Repeatability ±5 µm. These specs allow dot placement with sub-millimetre precision. Essential for creating recognisable faces and complex geometric forms.

Grey-scale engraving? Yes. Vary the dot density. Darker areas of the image receive more dots per unit volume. Lighter areas receive fewer. The software automatically converts a 3D model or a 2D photograph (after depth-map extraction) into a point cloud with adjustable resolution. Dot diameter varies by modulating laser power (1% to 100% of 20 W) and pulse repetition frequency (20-200 kHz). Typical settings:

  • Fine detail (face, text): power 30-50%, frequency 80-120 kHz, dot size ≈0.12 mm.
  • Bright, highly visible logos: power 70-90%, frequency 40-60 kHz, dot size ≈0.25-0.35 mm.

Engraving Speed and Depth

Speed measured in "dots per second" (dps). This machine can achieve up to 80,000 dots per second. Depends on dot spacing and Z-axis movement. A full 3D portrait with two million dots? Completed in approximately 25-30 seconds of effective laser-on time, plus indexing time. Maximum practical engraving depth is 50 mm from the surface. Special long-focus lens? Depths up to 80 mm possible. LGWL-20WSL is fast.

Material Compatibility

What materials work beautifully?

  • Lead crystal (e.g., Swarovski type): Highest brightness and contrast. Engraves quickly.
  • Optical glass (BK7, K9): Slightly harder. Requires 10-20% more power. Still yields excellent detail.
  • Fused silica: Requires higher power or slower speed. But still produces clean dots.
  • Acrylic (PMMA): Engraves internally but dots are less bright. Usable for prototyping.

Not recommended for ordinary window glass. High internal stress. Non-homogeneous composition. Internal engraving may cause uncontrolled cracking. LGWL-20WSL knows its limits.

Software and 3D Model Processing

Bundled software. Compatible with Windows 10/11. Accepts STL, OBJ, 3DS, PLY file formats. Also includes a "photo-to-3D" feature. Converts a 2D portrait into a 3D relief (depth-map) using artificial intelligence. User adjustments:

  • Point cloud resolution (0.1-0.5 mm dot spacing).
  • Dot brightness (power map).
  • Direction of engraving (top-down or side-in).

Preview function simulates dot placement before actual engraving. Saves material. No wasted crystal. LGWL-20WSL protects your work.

Practical Examples

  • Corporate awards. A 100 × 100 × 60 mm crystal cube with a 3D company logo and recipient name. Engraving time: 9 minutes. 20 W power gave a bright, deep logo that stands out under any lighting.
  • Wedding gifts. A 3D portrait of the couple embedded in a 150 mm diameter crystal ball. Engraving time: 22 minutes. Fine-detail setting captured facial expressions clearly.
  • Architectural models. A 3D topographical map of a building site engraved inside a glass block. The machine processed 18 million dots in 3 hours. No missing points.
